Great Western Greenway: Westport to Achill

The Great Western Greenway follows the old Westport to Achill railway around the eastern and northern shores of Clew Bay. Traffic-free almost throughout, it links Westport, Newport and Mulranny with Achill Sound, with views over the bay's drumlin islands and towards Croagh Patrick. It was one of the first long greenways in Ireland and remains among the most popular.

Before you go
Mayo County Council publishes a length of 49 km; the gentle gradients suit families, but the exposed stretches beyond Mulranny can be windy. The greenway crosses farmland with the permission of landowners: keep to the path, close gates and keep dogs on leads. Bike hire and shuttle services operate in Westport, Newport, Mulranny and Achill in season. An out-and-back ride doubles the distance, so decide your turning point in advance.
