Lôn Las Cymru: Cardiff to Holyhead

Wales, from the south coast to Anglesey

Lôn Las Cymru is National Cycle Network Route 8, the long-distance route through the length of Wales. From Cardiff it climbs through the Taff valley into Bannau Brycheiniog, crosses mid Wales by way of Builth Wells and Machynlleth, skirts Eryri and reaches Anglesey before finishing at Holyhead. It is a hilly, scenic ride rather than a flat trail, with long stretches on quiet roads.

Before you go

The Walk Wheel Cycle Trust gives a length of 243.4 miles (391.7 km); allow at least five or six days for the whole route. Some passes exceed 400 metres and weather changes quickly in the mountains, so carry layers and lights. Services can be sparse between towns in mid Wales: plan water and food stops. Train stations at Cardiff, Machynlleth, Bangor and Holyhead help with returns; check bicycle reservations in advance.
