Hadrian's Wall Path follows the Roman frontier across northern England, from Wallsend in Newcastle upon Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway on the Cumbrian coast. National Trails describe an 84-mile (135 km) route past forts, milecastles and museums, with the most dramatic and hilliest section between Chollerford and Birdoswald.

Before you go

National Trails recommend walking between May and October, when the ground is normally dry and the risk of eroding the archaeology under the path is lower. The trail is well marked and suits reasonably fit walkers; the central 23 miles bring many short climbs. Walk east to west to follow the wall's construction, or west to east for the prevailing weather, and book accommodation early in summer.
