Overland Track: Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair

The Overland Track crosses the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, past alpine moors, rainforest, waterfalls and the highest peaks of the island. The Parks and Wildlife Service presents it as a six-day walk of 65 km between Ronny Creek and Narcissus, followed by a ferry across the lake or an extra day along its shore.

Before you go

From 1 October to 31 May a booking is compulsory and the track must be walked from north to south; a fee applies and huts are first come, first served, so a tent is required. Weather can turn to snow in any month. Check the Parks and Wildlife Service pages for bookings, the ferry timetable at Narcissus and current track conditions.

The route

The track comes from the OpenStreetMap relation "Overland Track", made of six section relations. The map keeps two separate portions without an artificial link; the measured total includes the lakeside section beyond Narcissus, which is why it exceeds the 65 km of the main walk. Distances are measured without altitudes.
